The 25th annual GLAAD Media Awards nominations are out, and Elton John, Lady Gaga, Vampire Weekend, Goldfrapp and Tegan and Sara are up for the Outstanding Music Artist prize.

According to GLAAD, the awards “recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives.”

Wilson Cruz, GLAAD’s national spokesperson, told Rolling Stone how the nominees were chosen. “The GLAAD Media Awards recognize talented LGBT artists who amplify the voice of the community through their music,” said Cruz. “From Elton John speaking out in support of LGBT Russians, to Tegan and Sara’s continued activism, to Goldfrapp’s inclusion of gender identity and self-discovery themes in their latest album, all of these nominees are using music as a platform to change cultural perceptions of the LGBT community.”

“Since its inception 25 years ago, the GLAAD Media Awards have reshaped the news and entertainment industries, inspiring thoughtful and inclusive characters and plotlines that have driven equality forward,” GLAAD President Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement. “This year has brought momentous progress for LGBT people and families – and our nominees have created images and stories that continue to challenge misconceptions, shatter stereotypes, and change hearts and minds of millions all across the globe.”

Last week, John blasted Russia’s new anti-gay laws, writing that “vicious homophobia has been legitimised by this legislation and given extremists the cover to abuse people’s basic human rights.” He argued, “Whatever the intention of Russia’s homosexuality and paedophilia propaganda laws, I am absolutely clear from my own personal experience that it is proving deeply dangerous to the LGBT community and deeply divisive to Russian society.”

Rolling Stone also received a nomination for Outstanding Magazine Article for Alex Morris’ “The Hidden War Against Gay Teens,” which explored how private Christian schools are using local laws to raise money while expelling gay students.

The GLAAD Media Awards will be held in Los Angeles on April 12th at the Beverly Hilton and in New York on May 3rd at the Waldorf Astoria.
