Eddie Vedder ‘Without You’ on ‘Letterman’

Pearl Jam frontman plays a tune from new album ‘Ukulele Songs’

Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder stopped by the Late Show with David Letterman last night to perform “Without You,” a tune from his winsome new album Ukulele Songs. Vedder, who Letterman says has single-handedly made the ukulele cool, strummed a tiny uke with a large sticker reading “CLARENCE,” his tribute to the recently departed E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons. The simple, trebly plink of the instrument brings out a gentle, handsome quality in Vedder’s voice that is often lost on Pearl Jam records, which tend to favor bombast and melodrama. Letterman was very impressed, telling his audience after the performance “If I had this guy’s voice, you could all kiss my ass.”
