E Street Band Guitarist Nils Lofgren Selling Off Instruments, Vintage Gear

Longtime Bruce Springsteen musician hopes nearly 40 items – including Gibson Les Paul from home studio – will become “piece of [his] musical history”

UPDATE: Lofgren has added 150 items for sale to his official Reverb Shop. The items include the musician’s first accordion and a Marshall rig he bought after his band opened for the Jimi Hendrix Experience and will go on sale May 4th.

Nils Lofgren, singer-songwriter and longtime guitarist for Bruce Springsteen‘s E Street Band, has teamed with music gear marketplace Reverb to sell dozens of items from his personal collection.

Some of the most notable pieces include a Gibson Les Paul from Lofgren’s home studio, two Fender Twin amplifiers used onstage with Springsteen and multiple Roland GP-8 effects processors utilized during solo and E Street Band tours. Nearly 40 items are available to purchase at Lofgren’s official web store.

The musician, an E Street Band member since 1984, launched the Reverb sale after evaluating his “massive” collection and determining that some items could be better appreciated by fans and other musicians.

“In my 49th year on the road professionally, I find myself with a massive amount of great instruments and gear I’ve acquired and put to good use for over half a century,” he tells Rolling Stone. “As I’m regularly refining and adjusting gear for every musical chapter … I’ve had the idea for a long time to get the gear that’s sitting idle into the hands of musicians who would use it regularly as I once did. I continue to donate gear to local school programs, family, friends, and charities, but the overall accumulation of gear remains enormous.”

Lofgren adds that, as a child, he fantasized about having a “big museum” with every piece of gear from his life “documented, preserved and there when you want to stroll down memory lane.” But his priorities have shifted over the years, and he doesn’t want quality instruments to collect dust.

“Though I have a personal history with all the items and honor each piece, the overriding factor is that they’re not being used regularly,” he says. “I want to get them into the hands of musicians that will play them or people who may value them as a piece of my musical history. I’m optimistic that the musical discovery and excitement each piece once gifted me will be a new adventure for anyone who gets them and I take comfort in that.

“While each piece of gear in the shop is special to me – spanning my old band Grin, my many solo projects, my work in bands with Neil Young, E Street, Ringo Starr, and many others, on tour and in the studio – I’m at peace knowing that these pieces will be used and enjoyed regularly again,” he adds.

Lofgren recently joined the E Street Band for a tour promoting The Ties That Bind, an expansive box set featuring unreleased material recorded during the sessions for 1980’s The River.
