Back in May, “Can I,” a collaboration between Drake and Beyoncé, prematurely arrived without warning. Neither artist commented on the leaked, unfinished track, and five months passed without the sultry jam being officially released. However, Drake revived “Can I” Saturday on his OVO Sound radio show on Apple Music’s Beats 1, premiering a more polished version of the seductive number built around a sample of Beyoncé asking “Can I baby?”
It’s unclear whether the track is destined for Drake’s upcoming LP Views From the 6 or if it will remain unreleased. Drake and Beyoncé previously teamed up for the 2013 Beyoncé song “Mine.” “Can I” arrived on the first episode of OVO Sound to air following the expiration of Apple Music’s free three-month trial. Drake’s continued participation is one of that streaming service’s selling points, so it was interesting that the rapper used his radio show to exclusively premiere new music featuring Beyoncé, an artist aligned with Tidal.
In September, Drake and Future dropped their joint mixtape What a Time to Be Alive on Apple Music, and the two rappers reconnected to perform to debut a pair of those songs live during Drake’s Saturday night headlining set at the Austin City Limits festival. Together, the duo delivered “Big Rings” and the Michael Jordan logo-inspired “Jumpman” as well as “Where Ya At,” a single off Future’s own DS2.
