Alex Kapranos lifted the song from an actual conversation he had an art gallery party in Glasgow, Scotland, in December 2004. "When you're at parties, you have conversations — well, you don't really have conversations, you have people shouting in your ear," the Franz Ferdinand lead singer said. "And when I got home, I was a wee bit drunk and I wrote down some of the funniest things [I heard]. The song came out of that." The lyric about a particular lewd act that involved a "famous friend" was also based on a conversation he had with a partygoer that night.
