DJ Shadow Selling Rare Records at Madlib Event

DJ Shadow will be selling hundreds of records from his personal collection at an upcoming L.A. popup shop with Madlib on September 10th and 11th. The event will also include some of the DJ-producer’s archival rarities, an exclusive vinyl edition of his 2016 track “The Sideshow” and a “collector’s smorgasbord of 8-Tracks, cassettes, posters and other oddities,” Pitchfork reports.
“This is a chance for producers, dealers, and DJ’s to access seldom-seen and eclectic vinyl at affordable prices,” DJ Shadow, who will attend the event, said in a statement. “These are all records I have other copies of, and I’ve decided that I don’t need to keep multiples. Think of it as a year-long thrift-store hunt consolidated into two days … Vinyl is so fetishised, but I actually covet other formats equally. For example, ideally, I would want James Brown’s Payback album on reel, cassette and 8-track in addition to vinyl. If it existed as a first-run consumer product, I need it in my collection.”
In June, DJ Shadow released The Mountain Will Fall, his first LP since 2011’s The Less You Know, the Better. The album was a step forward for the 43-year-old California native, who shifted his approach from heavily sampling to original compositions. “My method’s always been to rethink some part of the process that’s going to put me out of my comfort zone and force me to embrace a new way of getting from point A to point B,” he told Rolling Stone. “Anything recent that proclaims itself to be hip-hop means that it’s kind of longing for a time that doesn’t exist anymore.”
