When super-producer DJ Mustard isn’t working on new beats for artists like YG, Big Sean, Jeremih and Fergie – and that represents just a small fraction of what he’s currently into – the 24-year-old Los Angeles hitmaker spends his free time crafting unsolicited remixes for big singles like Beyoncé’s “7/11” and, as he just posted on SoundCloud, Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney’s “FourFiveSeconds.”

With Mustard on the beat, the homely, sing-along feel of the original version off Rihanna’s upcoming album is replaced with cascading keys, clean vocals and bouncy bass kicks that makes the track club-ready. Even Mustard’s trademark chanting comes into play with a “Four-Five-Seconds” bridge at the one-minute mark. The one casualty of the super-trio’s remix is McCartney’s part of the equation, as the former Beatle’s acoustic riff is muted into oblivion.

In short, Mustard took a song that was simple and unique to begin with and put his own “simple and unique” spin on it, which is how the producer has previously described his work. “I’m big on simplicity. I’m not too much on all the extra instruments,” Mustard told Rolling Stone last year. “There’s not too much to it.”

The “FourFiveSeconds” remix is the first time fans have heard Rihanna singing atop a Mustard beat, but it won’t be the last: The man born Dijon MacFarlane told Rolling Stone that he worked on at least five tracks for the singer’s follow-up to Unapologetic. “It’s nothing that you ever heard me do,” Mustard said without elaborating further.
