Diddy’s ‘Downton Abbey’ Spoof Causes Confusion

Hip-hop mogul claims he was the show’s first black character

Downton Abbey recently announced the addition of Gary Carr as the show’s first black cast member, news that didn’t sit well with proud Abbey-head Sean “Diddy” Combs. The rapper and hip-hop mogul teamed up with Funny or Die to prove that he long preceded Carr as the first black character on British drama. And don’t worry, he’s got scenes to prove it: You can check out Diddy as Lord Wolcott, superimposed among the Downton cast, awing at the Dowager Countess snark; finding room to love Thomas while also loving Sybil, Mary, Mrs. Patmore and several others; playing a spot of cricket; and even settling a quarrel between Mrs. Crawley and the Dowager Countess with – what else – a couple of glasses of Ciroc.

Before it became clear that Diddy’s Downton turn was a spoof, the rapper sowed confusion yesterday among fans, and news organizations, when he tweeted that he had joined the show, and even changed his Twitter background to show Highclere Castle, where the series is filmed.

As news reports started filtering out, the producers were moved to deny talk that Diddy was joining the show, which airs on PBS in the United States. “It’s not true,” PBS spokeswoman Carrie Johnson told Reuters in an e-mail.

PBS recently announced Downton Abbey would be returning to the States for its fourth season on January 5th. Be sure to also check out our recap of the show’s most recent season finale, as well as our rundown of the Dowager Countess’ sharpest zingers from Season Three.
