Deftones Unleash Dynamic New Song ‘Prayers/Triangles’

Deftones debuted a powerful, rousing new track, “Prayers/Triangles,” off their upcoming album Gore, on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 radio show Thursday.

“Prayers/Triangles” moves deftly between the elegant and brutal, with swimming guitars guiding a near-psychedelic verse that gives way to an elegiac, but monstrous chorus. Frontman Chino Moreno unleashes a stirring vocal performance that’s soaring and ethereal one moment, ragged and torn the next.

“It’s one of those songs that’s very Deftones-esque,” Moreno told Lowe about why the band decided to introduce Gore with “Prayers/Triangles.” “That dynamic is there as far as that ebb and flow, those parts that go at your throat, but it also has a soothing quality to it. That dichotomy I think is what makes us who we are — it’s sort of our DNA. It’s a good representation of where we’re at.”

Gore is slated for release on April 8th via DIY and follows the group’s 2012 effort Koi No Yokan. Deftones are scheduled to hit the road this spring and summer as well, starting with an appearance at the Musink Festival in Costa Mesa, California on March 5th. 

“The songs are amazing, and we wrote them in a really cool way,” Moreno told Rolling Stone of the new album. “We had all of us in a room together with one person expressing an idea and another person jumping on it. The songs are really built as a collective. We have five guys who have almost completely different takes on music, so when it works, it works great.”
