Death from Above 1979 Drop Explosive New Track ‘Government Trash’

Toronto garage duo unveil another song from ‘The Physical World’

With less than a month before garage duo Death from Above 1979 finally release The Physical World, the band’s second album and first since 2004’s You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine, DFA1979 have unveiled “Government Trash,” another track from their comeback LP. The Physical World arrives September 9th.

Thankfully, “Government Trash” is an improvement on The Physical World‘s first single “Trainwreck 1979,” which Rolling Stone awarded only two out of five stars in our song review. “Government Trash” is a three-minute burst of nonstop energy that captures the frantic spirit of DFA1979 faves like “Romantic Rights” and “Going Steady.”

As Rolling Stone previously reported, DFA1979’s Jesse F. Keeler set the bar high when he told RS way back in 2005, “We’re a lot better at what we do, and what’s going to be different on the next record is, now that I’ve got your attention, I can do what I want to do. The last record we made was like [Radiohead’s] Pablo Honey, and this one will be more like Kid A.”

In a recent interview with NME, co-founder Sebastien Grainger explained the reason for the new album. “No matter what Jesse and I do, on whatever scale of success it’s sat on, there’s always some kind of reference to Death From Above,” Grainger said. “It’s only frustrating because it’s so lazy. So we’re putting out a Death From Above record and if the press is like, ‘It’s not what we expected,’ or however they react to it, it’s like, ‘Well, you’ve been fucking asking for it.'”

Even better than hearing a new Death from Above 1979 album: Seeing Death from Above 1979 live. The duo has mapped out an extensive trek in support of their new disc, kicking off September 6th with a hometown gig at Toronto’s Riot Fest. From there, DFA1979 travel overseas before returning October 31st for New Orleans’ Voodoo Fest, which kicks off the North American leg. Check out all the band’s tour dates at their official site, where you can also pre-order The Physical World.
