Shoegaze-metal adventurers Deafheaven have detailed their upcoming third studio album, New Bermuda. The five-track LP, the San Francisco quintet’s first with new label ANTI-, is out October 2nd and available for vinyl and CD pre-order at the band’s official store.
Deafheaven tracked New Bermuda in April at two California spots: Oakland’s 25th Street Recording and East Palo Alto’s Atomic Garden Recording. The album, their follow-up to 2013’s acclaimed Sunbather, was produced, engineered, mixed and mastered by the band’s previous studio collaborator Jack Shirley. New Bermuda marks the recorded debut of touring members Stephen Clark (bass) and Shiv Mehra (guitar).
In a statement, frontman George Clarke says he created the title concept “to describe a new destination in life, a nebulous point of arrival and an unknown future where things get swallowed up and dragged into darkness.”
Deafheaven will perform at the Heavy Montreal Festival on August 8th. Details of an North American tour will be announced soon. An in-studio trailer offers a sample of new music – which veers between elegant, oceanic electric guitar ambience and punishing, distorted metal.
In 2013, Rolling Stone named Sunbather the Best Metal Album of the Year, noting, “Part black metal scream, part shoegaze blur, all emotional overload, complete with a pink cover and a title implying that the musicians therein do, indeed, go outside, Sunbather was a mind-blower, bowling over innocent listeners with fist-pumping hooks that wouldn’t sound out of place on whatever U2 is finishing up.”
New Bermuda Track List:
1. “Brought to the Water”
3. “Baby Blue”
4. “Come Back”
5. “Gifts for the Earth”
