A documentary about the touring art exhibition David Bowie Is, which premiered at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum last year, will run in more than 100 movie theaters in the United States on September 23rd. That same day, the exhibition itself – which consists of photos, costumes and other items from the David Bowie Archive – will open at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art and will remain on view until January 4th.

The film, directed by BAFTA award winner Hamish Hamilton on the London exhibition’s closing night, presents a tour of the exhibition with help from special guests like Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker and Japanese fashion designer Kansai Yamamoto, among others. Additionally, the David Bowie Is curators, Victoria Broackes and Geoffrey Marsh, offer background info about some of the singer’s music videos, costumes, handwritten lyrics, cover art, set designs and diary entries. The idea is to show the evolution of Bowie’s creative process.

“This documentary brings to life how David Bowie embraced creativity from a variety of fields including performance art, music, dance, theater, and the visual arts, and fostered collaborations with artists of all kinds throughout his life,” Museum of Contemporary Art’s chief curator, Michael Darling, said in a statement. “We are fortunate to have this film’s debut coinciding with the MCA’s opening of this extraordinary exhibition.”

Tickets for the theatrical screenings and Museum of Contemporary Art exhibition are on sale now.
