Dave Grohl Talks ‘Sound City,’ Nirvana on ‘Colbert’

Dave Grohl stopped by The Colbert Report last night to talk about his new documentary Sound City. The film tells the story of the famed Van Nuys, California, recording studio where some of rock’s biggest acts recorded landmark albums. Colbert and Grohl talked about the musician’s move to documentary filmmaking; the star-studded Sound City Players gigs that find him jamming with rock luminaries like Stevie Nicks, John Fogerty and Paul McCartney; and the studio’s beloved Neve 8028 recording console, which Grohl purchased when the studio closed.

“I really consider that board to be responsible for where I am today,” said Grohl, who recorded at Sound City when Nirvana made Nevermind. When Colbert asked if he ever thought in retrospect, “why didn’t we turn up the drums!” Grohl responded with a smile: “You know I wouldn’t change a thing. That record turned out pretty good.”
