D’Angelo has canceled three more shows “due to a medical emergency,” bringing to five the number of dates the R&B singer has nixed since last weekend. He pulled out of shows in Chicago, Minneapolis and San Diego, which followed earlier cancellations in New York and Maryland.

Promoter Live Nation cited an unspecifided medical emergency in announcing the cancellations, the Chicago Tribune reports, and an agent for D’Angelo confirmed that a health issue was involved. “It’s serious, but he’ll be OK,” a House of Blues executive said he was told. The singer was said to be in the hospital when he canceled a performance last weekend in Columbia, Maryland.

The singer, who is also scheduled to perform Saturday at Outside Lands in San Francisco, has been a more active presence on tour lately after a reclusive period during which he rarely performed live. D’Angelo earlier this year was close to finishing his first new album since 2000’s Voodoo. Roots drummer Questlove, who has worked on the album, described it in January as “probably my generation’s version of Sly [and the Family Stone’s] There’s a Riot Goin’ On.”
