Damon Albarn Says Blur Will “Definitely” Record New Songs

Damon Albarn has promised Blur fans that the reunited Britpop band will record more new songs — but it’s unlikely the group will ever get around to making a full album to follow up 2003’s Think Tank. The news comes after Blur released their first new song in seven years, “Fool’s Day,” as a 7″ vinyl single to celebrate this year’s Record Store Day. The band later put out the song as a free download for fans who didn’t scoop up one of the 1,000 limited-edition singles pressed for the occasion.

“I’m definitely going to do a few more of those seven-inches,” Albarn tells the NME . “I love the no pressure aspect.” A full album, by contrast, would require more of a commitment from Albarn, who is still on tour with his new main concern, Gorillaz. In the years since Blur originally disbanded, Albarn has gone on to release three studio albums with his animated band, as well as a disc with the Good, the Bad and the Queen. Albarn and animator Jamie Hewlett are reportedly already plotting an opera with graphic novelist Alan Moore as well as the follow-up to the most recent Gorillaz album Plastic Beach.

“We can’t do it all the time,” Albarn told NME about recording with Blur. “So I don’t want anyone to think there’s an album coming soon, it’s not possible, but we’ve got songs!” No timetable was provided for new material, but with Gorillaz currently on the road, it’s unlikely any new Blur tracks will be arriving soon.
