Courtney Love Loses Temporary Legal Control of Frances Bean
Geraldine Wyle, an attorney who represents Courtney Love’s daughter Frances Bean Cobain and Kurt Cobain’s mother and sister, Wendy O’Connor and Kimberly Dawn Cobain, has confirmed that Love has temporarily lost legal guardianship of Frances Bean. According to court documents obtained by TMZ, O’Connor and Cobain were awarded guardianship of the 17-year-old on Friday. Love was reportedly not in court for the hearing.
The guardianship, according to court papers, is for both Frances Bean personally and her estate. It does not give either woman any control over the trust established in the wake of Kurt Cobain’s suicide. The order expires February 10th. Frances Bean turns 18 on August 18th. The court proceedings are said to be sealed.

According to TMZ, the guardianship was established after a fairly long period of unstable conduct by Love. Once called the “most controversial woman in the history of rock” by Rolling Stone, Love has been at the center of several highly publicized incidents. In 2003, Love was arrested in Los Angeles trying to break windows at her then-beau and former manager Jim Barber’s home. Soon after, Love was treated for an accidental overdose of OxyContin.
Frances Bean was taken by the L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services and placed with Cobain’s mother in 2003. Two years later, Love admitted using drugs in violation of her probation and was ordered into a 28-day treatment program. She violated the terms of the program, and was later sentenced to six months in lock down rehab.
Over the past few months, Love has been in New York City working on Nobody’s Daughter, the follow-up to 2004’s America’s Sweetheart. Love recently told Rolling Stone her new album has “a lot of maternal instinct,” citing her favorite lyric, “Nobody’s daughter, she’s never was, she never will be beholden to anyone. She cannot kill. You don’t understand how evil we really are.”
“I don’t even know what that really means, but I know it’s something to do with my daughter and it’s also to do with me,” Love said.
