Courtney Love, Billy Corgan and Marilyn Manson Mend Longstanding Rift

The bizarre hate triangle of alternative rock– Courtney Love, Billy Corgan and Marilyn Manson – have finally made peace with one another. First, a photo of Corgan, Manson and Love sitting together was posted on the Hole singer’s Instagram with a caption that read “all hatchets buried.” Then on Friday night, Manson joined the Smashing Pumpkins onstage at the band’s London concert to perform his latest single “Third Day of a Seven Day Binge” as well as sing alongside Corgan when the Pumpkins performed “Ava Adore,” Stereogum reports.

Over the past 15 years, the three rockers have publicly beefed with one another in the press. Love and Corgan, who dated before Love married Kurt Cobain, had a war of words stemming from Love using a pair of Corgan-penned tracks on her 2010 album Nobody’s Daughter without permission. “I have no interest in supporting her in any way, shape or form. You can’t throw enough things down the abyss with a person like that,” Corgan told Rolling Stone at the time. He also attacked Love’s parenting skills and advised her to go “live off your husband’s money.”

However, following this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony where Love mended a long-running feud with Dave Grohl, the Hole singer expressed hope that she and Corgan would settle their differences. “The only person I’m concerned about is Corgan,” Love said in September. “I just wish he’d mellow out. That’s all. We’re older. Get over it.”

As for Love’s beef with Manson, their issues stem from a joint tour Manson and Hole embarked on in 1999. Nine concerts into the trek, Hole quit the tour, with possible reasons ranging from production costs to Love being unhappy with Manson’s depiction of her in his biography The Long Hard Road Out of Hell. And then there were the quotes Manson made about why he chose to tour with Love.

“I asked myself what is the last band in the world I would ever, ever want to tour with, and it was Hole, beyond a doubt,” Manson told the San Francisco Examiner before Hole’s exit. “But then I thought, I love a challenge, I like to surround myself with aggravation, it helps me perform better. And I thought, well, here’s a chance to show Courtney the difference between being a celebrity and being a real rock star.” Manson then added, “She never talked to me until I sold a million records. Sometimes we talk and it seems OK, other times, she’s just a bitch. I really don’t like her too much.”

Manson’s discord with Corgan similarly resulted from comments the shock rocker made in a public forum. Once friends – Manson and Corgan performed together at the Neil Young’s Bridge School Benefit – Manson talked to Larry King last year about his rift with the Smashing Pumpkins singer.

“I haven’t spoken to him but there was no fall out or anything,” Manson said (via Consequence of Sound). “I think he might have got mad once when I told him that it would be a good marketing idea that if he sold Charlie Brown T-shirts and bald caps at concerts and he may not have liked that. He does look like Charlie Brown a little bit, in fairness.”
