Cobain Guitar for Sale

Auction also offers instruments owned by Elton John, George Harrison

Kurt Cobain’s 1960s Mosrite Gospel guitar will be sold off on April 17th as part of the Icons of 20th Century Music auction, the first time one of the late Nirvana frontman’s instruments has been sold.

The right-handed guitar is still strung upside-down for left-handed play and includes Cobain’s original case with “Nirvana” and “Fuck Elvis” painted on it. Cobain purchased the guitar in San Francisco in 1990.

The auction is part of the twenty-seventh annual Dallas Guitar Show and Music Fest in Texas. Other instruments going under the hammer include a twelve-string guitar owned by George Harrison, Elton John’s composing piano, an acoustic guitar custom made for Gram Parsons (due to a fire at his home, it’s one of only two surviving Parsons instruments) and the stand-up bass owned by Motown session man James Jamerson.

In addition to the instruments, there is also a collection of wardrobe items being sold. A pair of Elvis Presley jumpsuits (including one designed by legendary tailor Nudie) are among the garments being offered along with assorted shirts, shoes, hats and jackets worn by the likes of John Lennon, Elton John, Buddy Holly, Ringo Starr and Johnny Rotten. The auction will also offer sundry letters, autographs, awards and other rock & roll artifacts.

Many of the items up for auction can be viewed at, where buyers can also start placing bids.
