Chromeo Showcase Funky Fake Airline in Funny or Die Video

The clip showcases the safety guidelines for their gag company, Mallard Air

Electro-funk act Chromeo invite you to “fly safe, stay funky” in a new Funny or Die video promoting their fake Canadian airline, Mallard Air. The group started the ongoing gag earlier in June, claiming to have invested money in the fledgling company; this goofy new clip (which all but confirms the news item as a gag) finds the duo showcasing the airline’s groovy safety policies to a soundtrack of throbbing synths.

“Now we know these pre-flight safety videos can be a little stuffy,” says a flight attendant. “So we decided to ask our friends from the rock & roll band Chromeo to help us make these safety precautions a little more funky.” Dave 1 and P-Thugg then begin their ass-shaking ode to safe air travel. “Have you ever met a frequent flyer / dressed in all white attire?” Macklovitch asks, while later seducing a potential mile high club inductee: “Trust me, girl – you look dashin’,” he sings, “even with your seatbelt fastened.” As for the safety policies themselves? Flyers are instructed that “life vests are both safe and fashionable.”

As Spin noted earlier this month, Chromeo went so far with the joke that they issued a statement about their airline deal. “When Mallard approached us about share acquisition, we thought it was a joke,” Macklovitch said. “Our business managers always encouraged us to diversify our investments. For a band like us, this feels bold and new.”

There’s even a semi-legit-looking website for Mallard Air, along with a Twitter account that doles out absurd tweets such as, “We bet you can’t name a single city without the letter “A” in it, sounds easy? It’s actually really hard and we don’t think u can!”

Chromeo released their fourth studio album, White Women, back in May. They recently announced their North American “Frequent Flyer Tour,” which kicks off this September.
