Christina Milian Gets Cool

Rising pop star plays failing pop star

Christina Milian will star in Be Cool, the sequel to the 1995 movie Get Shorty, due in theaters in February. The twenty-two-year-old rising pop star, whose “Dip It Low” is the Number Five single in the country, plays a singer “with a bad record deal” alongside John Travolta, Uma Thurman, the Rock and Vince Vaughn.

Milian portrays Linda Moon, a member of the girl group Chicks International. “It’s like a really bad version of the Spice Girls,” she says. “They just do remakes, and she wants to do her own music. She meets John Travolta’s character, Chili Palmer, and he checks her out and sees that she’s talented and wants to help her and manage her.”

Although Milian has been acting for the past twelve years (with roles in Charmed and Sister Sister, as well as a voiceover in A Bug’s Life), her singing career took off first. In 2000, she appeared on Ja Rule’s “Between Me and You,” and the following year her own single, “AM to PM,” hit Number One on the Billboard Hot 100. She’s currently touring in support of her second album, It’s About Time, scoring an opening slot through October on the Usher/Kanye West tour.

Milian continues to add to her Hollywood resume. She will play a cheerleader put into witness protection in Cheer Up, an action comedy also due next year starring Tommy Lee Jones.

“I’m kind of happy that I was never the successful actress that went into music,” she says. “But now that people know me for my music, it’s definitely worked out for my acting career.”
