Christina Grimmie was laid to rest at a private service in her New Jersey hometown Thursday, five days after The Voice singer’s tragic murder at a concert venue in Orlando. On Friday, Grimmie’s family held a public memorial for the singer in Medford, New Jersey, where they shared a video remembrance of Grimmie’s career, from YouTube hopeful to The Voice star.
“Christina Grimmie was taken from all of us far too soon, but the impact she had on this world in the short 22 years of her life will carry on forever,” the video’s description reads. The four-minute video was posted on both Grimmie’s YouTube and Facebook accounts. “My goal in my career is to inspire people, is to get my music out there and have people enjoy it, and have people think of me as an inspirational artist,” Grimmie says in a clip from the memorial video.
“You’re strong, so own it. Love, me,” the singer tells fans in the video’s closing moments.
At Grimmie’s funeral service, her brother Marcus spoke about his sister’s impact on family, friends and fans. “I don’t have anything to say, I don’t have words still and it’s a good and bad thing. All I’m going to say is thank God for the mark that she left on this world,” Marcus Grimmie told mourners. “All the rumors are true that when the gunman came…her arms were open. That’s how she treated everyone she knew, her arms were open for them. So thanks again for coming out you guys, and I love you Christina.”
Grimmie was shot June 10th during a post-concert autograph session at Orlando’s The Plaza Live and died from her wounds early the next morning. The shooter committed suicide after being tackled by Marcus Grimmie. Maroon 5’s Adam Levine, who coached Grimmie on The Voice, paid for the singer’s funeral.
Following Grimmie’s death, Selena Gomez – who also performed in Orlando that night –paid tribute to the singer, while Pantera, whose guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott was shot and killed in a similar incident involving a crazed fan, called for better artist protection.Selena Gomez paid tribute to late ‘Voice’ singer Christina Grimmie during her Miami concert.
