Chance the Rapper, Regina Spektor Tapped for ‘Hamilton Mixtape’

Following Hamilton‘s performance and win at the 2016 Grammy awards, the show’s creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda is curating a star-studded collection of remixes and covers of the Broadway musical’s songs. The Hamilton Mixtape will be out later this year.

Miranda detailed the project during a recent interview with Vanity Fair and revealed that contributors to the mixtape will include Chance the Rapper, Regina Spektor, Ben Folds, Busta Rhymes, and Queen Latifah (via Broadway World). “People are coming out of the woodwork, knocking on the door,” Miranda said of the musical’s many famous fans. “Half the songs are cover versions of songs in the show, and the others are interpolations — we’ll take some of this, some of that, and make something new out of it.”

Miranda added that he would not contribute to the mixtape. “I’m not going to be on it because for me, the goal is to keep this inspired by the original.”

In 2012, when the musical was still being workshopped, Hamilton was known as The Hamilton Mixtape. From there, the collection of raps based on Ron Chernow’s biography of Alexander Hamilton transformed into the Off-Broadway show Hamilton, which debuted in January 2015. The show moved to Broadway last August.

Miranda, who had seen immense success with his Broadway debut In the Heights, was awarded the MacArthur “Genius” Award last year for his latest musical. He also contributed original music to Star Wars: The Force Awakens and is currently writing new music for Disney’s upcoming animated feature Moana, which will star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as a demi-god named Maui.
