Chance the Rapper, a disciple of fellow Chicago rapper Kanye West, recently interpolated The College Dropout cut “Family Business” during a concert performance. Now, Chance has unveiled his studio take on that cover, dubbed “Family Matters.” The track shares its title with Chance’s freshly embarked U.S. tour, and the video features the rapper and his crew prepping to hit the road, as well as Chance’s own home movies from his youth that stress the chorus, “family’s all that matters.”
The video also features rehearsals with Chance practicing with his brass-packed backing band the Social Experiment, who are also credited on Donnie Trumpet’s Surf LP that prominently features the rapper. Although Chance completely overhauled the “Family Business” lyrics, Kanye’s beat isn’t the only evidence of the rapper in the clip; at the 20-second mark, Chance is seen in soundcheck sporting a Yeezus Tour shirt.
Chance’s Family Matters Tour kicked off October 10th in Austin, Texas. For the jaunt, which concludes with a November 25th concert at Los Angeles’ Shrine Expo, Chance the Rapper will be joined by Metro Boomin, D.R.A.M. and Towkio. In July, Rolling Stone spoke to Chance about Donnie Trumpet and the Social Experiment’s freewheeling Surf, which allowed the rapper to dodge the expectations he’s been carrying since the release of his 2013 breakthrough Acid Rap. “People don’t want rap to be anything other than it is,” Chance said. “But genres expand. My contributions, no matter how they sound, will always be rap, because they’ll always be black.” As for a solo LP under his own moniker, Chance replied, “That’s a good question. Let’s say I don’t know.”
