Chance the Rapper Curating Free Chicago Festival
Chance the Rapper is curating the first annual Teens in the Park festival, scheduled for Chicago’s Northerly Island on June 24th. The event, presented by the city’s park district, is free for those between 13 and 24 years old (along with adult chaperones) and will feature performances from Chance collaborator Donnie Trumpet, bop artist DLow and more, the Fader reports. Registration is available at Live Nation.
In addition to music, the fest will feature activity tents hosted by organizations like The Art Institute and Donda’s House (the non-profit created in memory of Kanye West’s late mother) that offer space to try out “graffiti art, breakdancing, jewelry making and fashion design.”
“I’m organizing Chicago’s first T.I.P festival. . . SO YOU KNOW ITS [sic] GON BE FREE,” Chance tweeted on Tuesday.
Chance was featured on last month’s Surf, the debut album from musical collective Donnie Trumpet and the Social Experiment. The side project, which blends hip-hop with R&B and free jazz elements, is led by Chance’s friend Nico Segal (Donnie Trumpet). The LP – featuring cameos from Busta Rhymes, Big Sean, J. Cole, Janelle Monae and Erykah Badu – is available as a free download on iTunes.
Early reports pegged Surf as the official follow-up to Chance’s acclaimed 2013 mixtape, Acid Rap, but the rapper still hasn’t announced plans for a new LP.
“Every day I literally wake up and figure out when I’m gonna be able to go to the studio,” Chance told the Fader earlier this year. “And in the meantime, I’m trying to do some very fun shit.”
