Cee Lo Green Calls 2012 Drug Case ‘Blown Out of Proportion’

“We make mistakes, but I am not my mistakes,” singer says on ‘Steve Harvey Show’

Cee Lo Green apologized for a 2012 drug incident that led to his exit from The Voice and a string of controversial tweets about rape, while also calling the case “blown out of proportion” on The Steve Harvey Show, The Wrap reports.

“We are human beings and we make mistakes, but I am not my mistakes,” Green said. “I am here, humbled and humanized and with a heartfelt new album that really does address the wisdom and understanding that I got out of the experience. So I’m very fortunate for that.”

In 2014, Green pleaded no contest to one felony count of furnishing a controlled substance, stemming from a 2012 incident in which a woman accused him of slipping Ecstasy into her drink. As of October, Green had completed his court-mandated 360 hours of community service, but remains on probation.

While Green said he had not spoken with the woman recently, their last conversation was amicable. “We walked away from it,” he said. “Really unfortunate, inconvenient for both of us. We both agreed we would like to resume back to real life, it was something that was blown out of proportion. I’m not even at liberty to be so detailed about it, but like I said, it was amicable.”

Green faced a severe public backlash after his plea when he took to Twitter to defend himself against accusations that he had raped the woman. “If someone is passed out they’re not even WITH you consciously, so WITH implies consent,” he wrote. “People who have really been raped REMEMBER!!!” (Green was not charged with rape, as prosecutors found the sex to be consensual.)

Green apologized for his comments this summer, calling his actions “highly irresponsible” and admitting he was “most certainly not thinking, not considering whom [he] might offend.” Green said he regretted his comments so much that he considered naming his new album, Girl Power, before settling on Heart Blanche. The LP was released in November.
