Hear Cat Power’s Heartfelt Cover of Rihanna’s ‘Stay’

Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power, has unveiled the new video for her heartfelt rendition of Rihanna’s “Stay.” It’s the third single, following “Woman” and “Wanderer,” from her forthcoming album, Wanderer.

Filmed by her frequent collaborator Greg Hunt in the Los Angeles studio of Rob Schnapf, the visual features Marshall on piano in the darkened studio framed by candlelight. She’s filmed in the round, echoing the song’s “round and around and around we go” lyrics. Her lilting vocals are buoyed by the spare melody and light backing vocals and strings.

“I love the tradition of covering songs. I think it’s one of the highest compliments you can pay another artist,” Marshall said in a statement. “It’s one of the great traditions in American music and one of the true pleasures of music history.”

Wanderer is the follow-up to 2012’s Sun, set for release on October 5th via Domino. Cat Power hits the road on a North American tour in support of Wanderer beginning on September 25th in Berkeley, California.
