Carly Rae Jepsen Lives Pop Fairy Tale in ‘Your Type’ Video
Carly Rae Jepsen muddles the lines between fantasy and reality in the charming video for “Your Type,” one of several sugar-coated anthems from her new album, Emotion.
The dulcet words of an anonymous nighttime radio DJ introduce the clip’s “Cinderella story,” as the camera tracks Jepsen in the throes of the doldrums, working, writing and wandering the city alone. After her headphones are stolen while she snoozes on a park bench, the singer takes matters into her own hands and makes her way to a nearly deserted neon-lit club.
In the bathroom, Jepsen changes her outfit before taking the stage with the house band, swaying awkwardly by the microphone as the bar patrons stare blankly. But as “Your Type” gallops ahead, the video starts jumping between Jepsen onstage amidst the sparse, uninterested audience and one caught in the throes of the song. While the performance ends in the emptier room, Jepsen, like Cinderella, walks out out of the club with the shoes to prove it wasn’t all a fairy tale.
Jepsen is about to kick off another string of live dates in support of Emotion, her widely acclaimed Eighties pop-inspired follow-up to 2012’s Kiss and its ubiquitous single, “Call Me Maybe.” Jepsen has a mix of dates in the U.S. and Japan scheduled for this fall and winter, while a Canadian tour will follow next spring.
