Bruce Springsteen Slams Trump: ‘America Is a Nation of Immigrants’

Onstage in Australia, rocker criticizes president’s executive order “Muslim ban”

During a concert in Australia, Bruce Springsteen slammed President Donald Trump for his executive order “Muslim ban,” echoing the rage of thousands of protesters. The rock legend introduced 2006 track “American Land,” which he dubbed “an immigrants’ song,” with a rallying cry of equality.

“Tonight, we want to add our voices to the thousands of Americans who are protesting at airports around our country the Muslim ban and the detention of foreign nationals and refugees,” he said, cheered on by the crowd. “America is a nation of immigrants, and we find this anti-democratic and fundamentally un-American.”

Trump signed the widely criticized executive order on Friday, suspending immigration from seven countries with predominantly Muslim populations. The order prevented all refugees from entering the United States for 120 days and gave Christians fleeing persecution priority over Muslims.

Springsteen famously spoke out against Trump during the presidential campaign. “The republic is under siege by a moron, basically,” the musician told Rolling Stone before the election. “The whole thing is tragic. Without overstating it, it’s a tragedy for our democracy.” During a previous stop on his Australian tour, Springsteen celebrated the historic Women’s March, calling the hundreds of thousands of worldwide protesters “the new American resistance.”
