Brandy Sues Record Label for Allegedly Blocking Release of New Music

R&B singer claims Chameleon Entertainment Group has prevented her from recording new music since 2012

R&B singer Brandy has filed a lawsuit against her label, claiming that Chameleon Entertainment Group has blocked her from recording new music (via Associated Press). Her most recent album was 2012’s Two Eleven.

Brandy filed the suit on Tuesday, claiming that her deal with Chameleon gave the label the option of releasing four more albums, but alleging that they have kept her from recording new material in the last four years. The singer also claims that the label’s refusal to let her record music is in an attempt to get her to sign on to a new recording deal. According to the lawsuit, Brandy has dissolved her contract with Chameleon, but wants a judge’s ruling that it is void.

Representatives for Brandy and Chameleon Entertainment Group did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Brandy signed a joint deal with RCA and Chameleon in 2011. When she first launched her career in 1993, she was signed to Atlantic Records, but she parted ways with the company in 2004 after 11 years and four albums. She requested and received an unconditional release from the label and cited a desire to “move on” as her reason for the decision.

Brandy’s search for a new label was stalled when she was involved in a fatal car accident in 2006 when her vehicle struck that of Awatef Aboudihaj, who died from her injuries the next day. Brandy was cleared of all charges.

In 2008, the singer signed to Epic Records and released the album Human later that year. Her contract with Epic was abruptly terminated in 2009, as was her management contract with Roc Nation. Further details on the end of her relationships with the label and management company were never revealed.

Since the release of Two Eleven on Chameleon/RCA, Brandy has made a return to acting, appearing on the CW’s 90210 and Lifetime’s Drop Dead Diva. Last year, she appeared in the Broadway production of Chicago as Roxie Hart.
