Bombino Recruits Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach on ‘Azamane Tiliade’

Nigerien guitarist decamps to Nashville rocker’s studio

For his new album, Nomad, Nigerien guitarist Bombino found a producer an ocean away: Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys. Together, the pair recorded raw, dialed-up jams rooted in the electric-blues tradition of Bombino’s nomadic, desert-dwelling Tuareg people. They recorded the proggy, groove-heavy track “Azamane Tiliade” at Auerbach’s studio in Nashville, and you can get an exclusive look at its accompanying, colorful video here.

After getting to know Bombino, Auerbach was deeply impressed with the guitarist’s sense of wisdom and his ability to connect with those around him. “We hung out on the east side and went to a couple of bars. Bombino’s a super modest guy, very nice,” Auerbach tells Rolling Stone. “His whole crew is a bunch of characters and he’s definitely the Grand Poobah. I don’t think the other guys are that much younger than him, but he definitely feels like the wise man; you just sort of get that sense when you’re around him. He doesn’t say that much but he’s humble and well-respected.”

Nomad is available now on Nonesuch.
