Bob Dylan to Appear at Woody Guthrie Tribute
Bob Dylan will be making his first public appearance in nearly two years at a Woody Guthrie Memorial Concert to be held in Carnegie Hall in New York City on January 20th. Harold Leventhal, who is coordinating the event and who once managed Guthrie, the Weavers and other great names of folk music in the forties and fifties, said that when Dylan learned of the event, he insisted on participating in the program. In fact, immediately following Woody’s death, Bob had called Leventhal with the desire to do something to commemorate Guthrie.
Dylan proclaimed his indebtedness to Guthrie at his own first Carnegie Hall concert, where he read the as yet unpublished “Poem To Woody.”
Other artists who will perform at the concert are Judy Collins, Richie Havens, Pete Seeger, Millard Lampell and others. Lampell has written the program, which is based on the songs and writing works of Woody Guthrie.
