Iconic album covers for artists like Blondie, Katy Perry, David Bowie and Janelle Monae have been reimagined with girls from Girls Rock Camp

Girl Rock Camp Foundation is a non-profit with 45 locations across the U.S. where young girls are encouraged to express themselves with music. The campers each learn an instrument and form a band with one another. By the end of their week at the camp, the campers will have written a song with their respective bands and perform the songs at a live venue. The photo project benefits the end-of-year grant drive for the camp.

The shoots allowed many of the campers to step into the shoes of their role models. “She’s like a real-life superhero,” eight-year-old camper Jaiya said about dressing up as Janelle Monae in the Electric Lady remake. Photographers Carli Davidson, Holly Andres, Shelby Duncan and Melanie Aron helped transform the young campers into the rock and pop stars.

Kathleen Hanna, Tegan and Sara and Beth Ditto are all members of the camp’s advisory board with Ditto attending the shoot to support her nine-year-old niece Ava (who stars as Debbie Harry in the Parallel Lines remake).

“Rock Camp is really close to my heart,” Ditto said in a statement. “I coached at Camp for several summers, and it was so cool to watch girls find their voices. To play singers for them like Nina Hagen, Cibo Matto, Mai Rainey [and] Yoko Ono [opened] up the idea of what ‘singing’ is and what kinds of voices are beautiful. I loved getting to share Camp with Ava, and seeing her transform into a tiny, scowling Debbie Harry was unbelievable! Baby’s first wig cap!”
