Earlier this year, Texas psych-rockers the Black Angels stopped by the Moog Sound Lab in Asheville, North Carolina, where the band got to pick from hundres of analog and electric instruments to test out on a version of “Don’t Play With Guns,” from their 2013 release Indigo Meadow.
“I’m so glad we had time to swing by the Moog Sound Lab to record with nothing but Moog synthesizers,” keyboardist Kyle Hunt tells Rolling Stone. “It was fun to strip away our ‘go to’ guitars, organs and fuzz pedals and see what can happen when you explore analog synthesis with modern stability and patching!”
In this video, stacks of high-tech machinery surround the band. Hunt, playing a Moog keyboard, lays down a buzzing intro for guitarist Christian Bland’s thundering blues-based riff. Then, as soon as Alex Maas starts singing, the Moog equipment morphs the band’s sound, giving the instruments a distant, ominous texture.
