Billy Joel Returns Home After Hip Replacement

Billy Joel has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home following double hip-replacement surgery.

“Billy is home at his Oyster Bay, NY home and is feeling great,” the singer’s publicist told Rolling Stone on Thursday.

Joel’s bilateral hip replacement in late November was the result of a congenital disorder; in the weeks before his surgery, he had been photographed walking with a cane. His ex-wife Christie Brinkley was reportedly taking care of him as he recuperated.

Joel has not performed since March, when he played Albany, N.Y. with Elton John. In February, he told Rolling Stone, “I see pictures of myself onstage, and I look at them and say, ‘There has to be some kind of mandatory retirement age for doing this gig,’ and then I watched the Super Bowl and saw the Who and I figure, ‘Well, I guess there is no mandatory retirement age.’ … It’s always possible that I’ll tour again, whether it’s with Elton or on my own. I love my job. For now I’m going to stop, but I won’t sit around for the rest of my life and rot.”
