Billy Corgan Blasts Amazon for Leaking Deluxe ‘Adore’ Track List

The Smashing Pumpkins frontman says that the digital store broke an agreement with the band

On Wednesday, Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan teased fans with news that he would be releasing the track list for the band’s upcoming deluxe reissue of their 1998 album Adore, but hours later he realized a digital retailer beat him to the punch. “Amazon decided to break an agreement and post track listing of Adore first, despite assurances otherwise that asked us to wait,” he wrote in a series of tweets collected by Stereogum. “Obviously I’ve had Adore track list for four months and could have posted anytime. But we try to coordinate these releases to balance all. So all I can say is that a) never again will I trust such promises and that b) for now on I’ll just do right by Smashing Pumpkins peeps first and foremost.”

Later in the day, Corgan issued what was to be the official unveiling, revealing that the box set’s six discs and DVD contained 107 tracks, including demos, outtakes, symphonic snippets, live recordings and a full, filmed concert from 1998. He also mentioned that he would be autographing and selling copies of the box set and vinyl re-release via his Highland Park, Illinois teahouse Madame ZuZu’s.

“I spent some time this morning preparing what was meant to be the reveal of the Adore box set, for where the real juice lies in it is what sonic goodies made their way on it,” he wrote. “Notably, I was prepared to share this information here on [Pumpkins news site] the Panopticon as far back as two months ago, but made the mistake of asking the record label if I should wait. And if you saw my comments earlier today, you already know that I’m very upset that an online retailer broke their agreement, posting the tracks up before we could do it here first as they’d asked. The irony being, Where do you think this kind of information comes from, if not for yours truly?”

Later in his missive, he explained just why he was so upset about the leak. “I’ve worked tirelessly to provide, pound-for-pound, the best reissues possible,” Corgan wrote. “And believe it or not, in most cases I lose more than I spend on those projects…. Now I have to field through excuses to figure out what I can trust going forward. Not because I believe in some corporate logo that helps sell plastic, but because of what I’ve labored to put on that plastic.”

The record itself showcased a divergence away from the rock guitar of the group’s 1995 release, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, and into electronica and folk music. It was also the first the group recorded without founding drummer Jimmy Chamberlain.
