Billie Joe Armstrong, ‘Ghostbusters’ Doc Highlight Tribeca 2016

A punk comedy starring Green Day’s frontman, docs on everything from Ghostbusters superfans to Scientology to soccer star Pelé, and an adaptation of a Dave Eggers’ book starring Tom Hanks highlight the remainder of the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival’s lineup.
Lee Kirk’s comedy Geezer stars Green Day singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong in his first leading role, playing a retired rocker who dives back into the punk scene in order to escape from the doldrums of middle age. Armstrong is scheduled to play a live performance after the world premiere screening. He won’t be the only major celebrity flying in to support a movie, as Jeff Zimbalist’s sports doc Pelé: Birth of a Legend will set the stage for an onstage conversation with the soccer legend.
Also announced today as part of Tribeca’s lineup: Katie Holmes’ feature-length directorial debut All We Had, the story of a mother and daughter trying to make a new life for themselves; an adaptation of Dave Eggers’ novel A Hologram for the King, directed by Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run) and starring Tom Hanks as an American businessman dealing with Saudi Arabian bureaucracy; the world premiere of Elvis & Nixon, a what-if farce about the King of Rock and Roll’s legendary meeting with the paranoid POTUS; and My Scientology Movie, in which a British journalist trues to investigate the controversial religion with, per the press release, “irreverent humor and biting irony.”
The fest also announced two work-in-progress screenings: An untitled film about Bill Nye the Science Guy; and Ghostheads, which explores the unique fandom that’s exploded around the Ghostbusters franchise. Arriving just in time for this summer’s reboot, Brendan Mertens’ doc features interviews with many of the series’ major players, including Dan Aykroyd, Ivan Reitman, and Sigourney Weaver.

The 2016 Tribeca Film Festival will take place from April 13th to April 24th.
