Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong and jazz-pop siren Norah Jones aren’t the most logical collaborators on paper, but they’ve found a common ground in their mutual love for the Everly Brothers. With their collaborative country-folk LP, Foreverly, Armstrong and Jones have crafted an album-length tribute to the Brothers’ 1958 album, Songs Our Daddy Taught Us. While Foreverly won’t hit shelves until November 25th, the duo have offered an exclusive stream of the sweet tune “Silver Haired Daddy of Mine.”

“If I could recall all the heartaches / Dear old daddy, I’ve caused you to bear,” Armstrong and Jones sing in tight-knit harmony, chased by honky tonk piano. “If I could erase those lines from your face / And bring back the gold to your hair.” In a recent interview with Rolling Stone‘s David Fricke, the duo talked about their collaborative process.

“That was the key for us – not to just copy the record,” says Jones, noting the emotional and sexual tension they brought out from the material. “Songs like ‘Down in the Willow Garden’ and ‘Put My Little Shoes Away’ – they’re such dark lyrics. We thought we’d play that up.” Armstrong also noted his fascination with the original album, wondering, “Man, what made (the Everly Brothers) want to make this record?”

“It seemed so cryptic that these guys would be doing songs about death, being in jail and lost love,” he says. “I liked the whole concept that this was something taught to them, and now it’s being taught to me. I thought it would be cool to pass the tradition one more time.”

Foreverly is available for pre-order on iTunes.
