L.A. Police Commander Andrew Smith said on Thursday that Mariah Yeater, the 20-year-old woman who claims Justin Bieber fathered her baby during a backstage fling, conceivably could be charged with statutory rape. According to California law, a legal adult who has unlawful sex with a minor and is not more than three years older is subject to one year in prison. Bieber was 16 at the time of the alleged encounter.

Yeater filed a paternity suit earlier this week in San Diego Superior Court. Bieber immediately issued a strong denial.
