Beatles’ ‘Help!’ Jackets Going Up for Auction

George Harrison and Ringo Starr’s jackets from the Beatles’ 1965 film Help!, which they also wore on the cover of the movie’s soundtrack, will be auctioned off among 200 other pieces of Beatles memorabilia, the BBC reports.

The jackets come from Help! director Richard Lester’s private collection and are expected to sell between approximately $82,000 and $115,000 when they’re made available through Omega Auctions next month.

“As Beatles clothing goes, these have got to be amongst the Holy Grail for any Beatles collector,” said auctioneer Paul Fairweather. “They feature on one of their most recognizable album covers and I have a feeling these could really fly off the block.”

The auction is set for March 20th – which also marks the 50th anniversary of the release of the Beatles’ hit “Can’t Buy Me Love” – and will take place at the Adelphi hotel in Liverpool.

Another piece of early Beatles history will also be auctioned off this spring: A chunk of wall from the set of the The Ed Sullivan Show signed by all four Beatles on the first night of their landmark three-night American debut. The wall is expected to fetch between $800,000 and $1 million.

During a chat with Rolling Stone last month, Starr recalled the excitement of the Beatles’ first trip to the States, saying: “It was Ed Sullivan, and it was a big show, and we didn’t know while we were playing that 70 million people were watching, but it was being in America that was so exciting. All the music we loved was in America; it came from America to England. Where we come from, Liverpool, it was great because it was a port, so all of the guys from New York would bring the tracks over. Vinyl in those days, the LPs, and it was just great. I could feel the buzz, even on the plane, it was so exciting. I went, Aaaaah!“

Of course there’s been plenty of contemporary Beatlemania surrounding the 50th anniversary of the Fab Four’s American debut: Starr and Paul McCartney reunited for a rare performance at this year’s Grammys. The next night, the duo took the stage together at The Night that Changed America: A Grammy Salute to the Beatles, a tribute concert featuring performances from Dave Grohl, Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder, Katy Perry, Pharrell, John Legend, Gary Clark, Jr. and the recently reunited Eurythmics.
