Bad Brains Launch Campaign to Benefit Dr. Know

Last November, Bad Brains guitarist Dr. Know, whose real name is Gary Miller, suffered cardiac arrest and was put on life support for two weeks following multiple organ failure. He spent almost three months in the hospital and was transferred to a medical rehabilitation facility, where he currently continues treatment. As Pitchfork reports, in an effort to assist with Miller’s medical expenses and physical therapy, band manager Vaughn Lewis has started a GoFundMe campaign.
On the campaign’s web page, Lewis states that Miller did not have medical insurance at the time of his hospitalization. The campaign hopes to raise $100,000 to assist with multiple medical bills and to help offset Miller’s living expenses as he has not been able to work. The fund has reached more than $20,000 in its first day.
“It’s been such an overwhelming first day of this campaign,” Bad Brains wrote on Facebook. “Doc and his family appreciate everything beyond words. Thank you!”
In the GoFundMe statement, Lewis wrote that doctors initially gave Miller a 5 percent chance of recovery, but now that he is in medical rehab “he continues to make incredible progress every day. Doc and his loved ones are now confident that he will make a full recovery and continue to touch our lives with his incredible music, kindness and positivity.”
