Astronaut Covers David Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity’ in Orbit

Cmdr. Chris Hadfield makes first music video in space

Cmdr. Chris Hadfield pulled off a cover of David Bowie’s 1969 classic “Space Oddity” like nobody else has: in space. Hadfield, a Canadian astronaut, recorded the vocals and guitar to this moving rendition while in orbit on the International Space Station, and this contemplative clip – said to be the first music video shot in space – shows Hadfield roaming the vessel alone. “I’m floating in the most peculiar way,” sings Hadfield, adrift in zero gravity with an acoustic guitar. He returns to Earth at the end, touching down in an escape pod as the song fades out. A cover has rarely been this fitting.
