Arctic Monkeys Cover Tame Impala’s ‘Feels Like We Only Go Backwards’

Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys stopped by Australia’s Triple J Radio to perform a cover of Tame Impala’s “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards.” Although Turner showed off a wide range of vocals on the Arctic Monkeys’ most recent album, AM — from high-pitched croon to deeper growl — there’s a gentle, dreamy element to his voice on the Tame Impala cover. The song was part of Triple J’s “Like a Version” segment, which has bands and artists play live, acoustic takes of their favorite songs.

How Arctic Monkeys Reinvented Their Sound

This is not the only recent, impressive cover the Arctic Monkeys have performed. In February, the band took on the Beatles’ “All My Loving” at Madison Square Garden to commemorate their historic 1964 appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show.

Turner also epically spoke on behalf of rock & roll at the BRIT Awards when Arctic Monkeys were recognized as the Best British Group and AM was awarded the British Album of the Year. “That rock & roll, it just won’t go away,” said Turner. “It might hibernate from time to time and sink back into the swamp… But it’s always waiting there, just around the corner, ready to make its way back through the sludge and smash through the glass ceiling, looking better than ever. Yeah, that rock & roll, it seems like it’s fading away sometimes, but it will never die. And there’s nothing you can do about it.”

Arctic Monkeys are currently in the midst of a worldwide tour, including Australia, Europe and North America. Along the way, they’ll headline Summerfest and Lollapalooza among many other festivals. Fans may be able to see a live collaboration soon, as Tame Impala will open for the band during two sold-out shows at London’s Finsbury Park later this month.
