Aphex Twin Cryptically Reveals First Album in 13 Years ‘SYRO’

Long-dormant IDM producer Richard D. James reveals his comeback LP following 2001’s ‘Drukqs’

It was Aphex Twin’s first tweet in over two years, but Richard D. James turned 140 characters into the news fans have been pining for since 2001’s Drukqs: A new Aphex Twin LP is on the way. Days after a strange Aphex-affiliated blimp hovered above London and James’ trademark logo was seen stenciled outside New York’s Radio City Music Hall, the long-dormant IDM wizard revealed that his new album will be dubbed SYRO. The always-technologically advanced James posted the album’s press release on the Deep Web, meaning only those with TOR proxy access can see the LP’s alleged cryptic track list. As Stereogum notes, Monday also marks James’ 43rd birthday.

Even though it has been 13 years since Aphex Twin dropped the divisive double-album Drukqs, the secretive producer has been in the headlines throughout 2014 thanks to an album he recorded two decades ago. Back in June, it was revealed that Minecraft creator Markus Persson spent $46,300 on eBay in order to pick up a super rare copy of James’ 1994 LP Caustic Window, an album that was abandoned after only four test pressings were made.

One of those pressings ended up on Discogs earlier this year, and Aphex fans quickly began a Kickstarter to purchase the physical test pressing and then digitally release the album to supporters thanks to a one-time distribution deal co-engineers by James and his Rephlex Records. After fans raised more than $67,000, digital copies were made, and the test pressing was resold, with Persson picking up a unique piece of Aphex history.

Just because Aphex Twin has been silent the past 13 years, it doesn’t mean James hasn’t been active. He bragged in 2011 that he was sitting on at least 10 unreleased albums. While Aphex Twin was dormant, James still supplied some tunes to his Analord series as recently as 2005, and he’s long been rumored to be the brains behind the mysterious Aphex-esque group the Tuss, though that remains unconfirmed. Aphex Twin’s “Avril 14th” was also memorably sampled by Kanye West for My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy‘s “Blame Game.”
