Apes Throw Jungle Dance Party in Coldplay’s ‘Adventure of a Lifetime’ Video

Band unveil ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’-inspired video for ‘A Head Full of Dreams’ single

Dancing apes seemed like a strange addition for Coldplay‘s otherwise straightforward performance of new single “Adventure of a Lifetime” at the American Music Awards, but now it all makes sense: The band have unveiled their new video for the A Head Full of Dreams track, and it boasts a group of CGI-created gorillas dancing in the jungle. Coldplay themselves don’t appear in the new video, but their likenesses – Chris Martin’s blue eyes, Jonny Buckland’s green hat – are featured in the main quartet of dancing gorillas.

The Mat Whitecross-directed “Adventure of a Lifetime” video shares some similarities with the ape-focused first portion of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. In that film, the apes discover how to use objects as weapons upon encountering a mysterious black monolith. In “Adventure of a Lifetime,” the monolith is instead a Beats Pill portable speaker blasting the Coldplay single, and upon finding instruments in the jungle, the gorillas opt to make music instead of using them for violence.

The “Adventure of a Lifetime” video comes just a day after Coldplay premiered their A Head Full of Dreams ballad “Everglow,” featuring Martin’s ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow on background vocals. The album itself arrives December 4th.
