Anoushka Shankar, Norah Jones Bond on ‘The Sun Won’t Set’

Anoushka Shankar suffered a heartbreaking loss while recording her new album: she lost her father, sitar legend Ravi Shankar. She wasn’t alone, though, and turned to family for support – so much so that for her track “The Sun Won’t Set,” she recruited her half-sister, Norah Jones.

Shankar and collaborator Nitin Sawhney broke ground on the gentle, dreamy track in the summer of 2012. “This song was a great example of putting in work first in order to enable spontaneity,” Shankar tells Rolling Stone. Sawhney and Shankar had their work cut out for them before meeting up with Jones. “I sent a rough mock-up to Norah and she liked it,” Shankar says. “Before traveling to New York, Nitin and I redid a rough arrangement for her to sing over.”

The track fell into place naturally when they teamed up in person. “Once we were all in a room together, we decided to chuck everything and just record live, and I’m so grateful we did,” Shankar says. “We were able to really listen and respond to each other and somehow really locked in to perform a live take together beautifully, even though the three of us had never played all together before.”
