Animal Collective Plot 2016 World Tour Behind ‘Painting With’ LP

Animal Collective will kick off an expansive world tour with a performance in Philadelphia on February 19th, the release date for their 10th LP, Painting With. The trek, the band’s first since 2013, will span North America and Europe, ending May 14th with a gig in Sayreville, New Jersey.
Tickets for all dates go on sale Friday, December 11th. Ratking, GFOTY and Kaitlyn Smith will serve as openers at various dates.
Last week, the experimental Baltimore outfit detailed Painting With – out February 19th via Domino Records – and released the jubilant lead single “FloriDada,” which finds vocalists Dave “Avey Tare” Portner and Noah “Panda Bear” Lennox observing the United States’ sprawling scenery in a psychedelic call-and-response. “I wanna discover the key / And open the everywhere place,” they sing. “A mix of sky from Montana / dipped in FloriDada.”
Animal Collective recently spoke with Rolling Stone about the minimalist intensity that propelled the sessions for their new LP. “We talked about no ambient [passages],” said Brian “Geologist” Weitz. “Even [2009’s] Merriweather Post Pavilion, people were saying was our poppiest record up to that point, but there still were like long, drawn-out passages of drone. With this one we were just like in and out. No long buildups to get to it, no long outros. We talked about, like, our Ramones record.”
As a result of that focus, Painting With – which finds the band working without on-off guitarist Josh “Deakin” Dibb – became one of Animal Collective’s most direct, accessible albums. “Even back to like [2007’s] Strawberry Jam, we’ve wanted to do a record that was a little more close-up, direct, Beatles-y style record,” Portner said. “My mom made the comment — not in [a] critical way, ‘These guys were on Ellen! And they sounded just like you!” added Weitz. “You could be on Ellen!'”
