Amos Lee Covers John Prine’s ‘Christmas in Prison’ – Premiere

Footage from the historic Capitol Records Tower

Prison is not a fun place to be, and at Christmastime, it’s doubly bad. Amos Lee details the harshness of that situation on his take on the John Prine classic “Christmas in Prison.”

The Best Rock & Roll Christmas Songs

The song was filmed at the historic Capitol Records Tower in Hollywood (where Sinatra recorded!) for the “1 Mic 1 Take” series, which features artists performing live-in-studio renditions of songs on vintage equipment. On choosing the song, Lee told Rolling Stone, “I’ve always loved John Prine. He’s been an inspiration since I first picked up a guitar.”

So it makes sense that Lee’s version focuses on the song’s delicate guitar work. He slows down the tempo, strumming gently and giving each note enough space to drift. Meanwhile, Lee’s voice is measured but rich, giving heft to the song’s contemplative lyrics, such as “Wait awhile eternity / Old Mother Nature’s got nothing on me.”

Lee recently released Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song and will be on tour in February.
