ALO Talk About Improvisation and Sustainable Growth at Bonnaroo

"It started as a rivalry," ALO's keyboardist Zach Gill says of the band's early support from Jack Johnson. They all met as students at UC Santa Barbara, fiercely competing to be the biggest backyard party band in the freshman dorms. In this interview at Bonnaroo, ALO talk to Rolling Stone about how to practice improvising, moving to Georgia to meet James Brown, recording their latest album in San Francisco, and how they feel about the "jam band" label. "It's kind of always been a dirty word. It's something that we've always had to both embrace and work around and try to figure out what it means to us."
