Alicia Keys’ ‘Digital Death’ Campaign Hits $1 Million

Thanks to a big donation from philanthropist Stewart Rahr, Keep a Child Alive — the charity run by Alicia Keys — passed the $1 million mark. Last week, several celebrities, including Lady Gaga, Usher and Justin Timberlake, signed off of social media until Keep A Child Alive reached her fundraising goal. Several promoted the effort by posing in caskets for posters that featured a headline saying, for example, “Alicia Keys Is Dead.”
“@aliciakeys is alive!,” Keys tweeted Monday evening. “We raised $1mil. to help KCA fight AIDS & save lives! Thank u so much & never stop buying life! … Big Shout to YOU!! ALL THE ARTISTS involved!!! And STEWIE RAH!!!”
“Stewie Rah” is Rahr, who matched the $500,000 raised by the public. Rahr owns a pharmaceutical distributor called Kinray, and was Number 536 on Forbes‘ 2010 list of the World’s Billionaires, with a net worth of more than $1.9 billion.
Keys’ Keep a Child Alive organization is dedicated to providing treatment and support to families affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa and India, with an annual benefit concert called the Black Ball.
