The track is centered around a poignant acoustic guitar line, which Alex da Kid mixes with stomping percussion. X Ambassadors’ Sam Harris handles the aching hook – “It’s not easy/ Breaking your heart” – and first verse, while King follows, lending her voice to the chorus as well. Wiz Khalifa closes the track with an array of nostalgic rhymes (“I remember that hole in the wall/ Twelve of us on the bus we was going hard”) that pushes out one last rousing chorus.
“By definition, my role as a producer is always collaborative,” said Alex da Kid in a statement. “I knew that when I put out my first single as an artist, I’d want to collaborate with an unexpected combination of amazing talent, so Wiz, Elle, and X Ambassadors were perfect. We each brought very different perspectives and life experience to the song and the subject of heartbreak, which is what I think makes the track work so well.”
While “Not Easy” marks Alex da Kid’s first solo offering, the producer has built an impressive discography over the past few years, producing tracks for Eminem (“Love the Way You Lie”), Dr. Dre (“I Need a Doctor”) Imagine Dragons (“Radioactive”), Nicki Minaj (“Bed of Lies,” “Massive Attack”) and more.
